About EduSTEM Advanced Biology

Welcome to EduSTEM Advanced Biology! This course is part of the EduSTEM Biology sequence, which has been designed for motivated middle school and high school biology students.
The EduSTEM Advanced Biology course is designed to supplement an existing biology course, and provide opportunities for deeper study, further engagement with course material, and exposure to real-world applications of classroom knowledge. This curriculum draws from advances in the field of biology and biochemistry to allow students without access to advanced biology material to embark on a passionate exploration of the natural world. Not only are fundamental biology topics expounded in detail, but Advanced Biology is replete with connections between classroom instruction and published literature.
Look out for these connections, which we call extensions. They are of varying difficulty, and will look like this:
EXTENSION
Deep-dives into complex biological pathways and investigations at the forefront of medical advances help students to understand the real-world applications of biology.
Please note, the Advanced Biology course requires the Campbell Biology textbook (11th edition).
Required Text: Urry LA, Cain ML, Wasserman SA, Minorsky PV, Reece JB. Campbell Biology. 11th edition. Boston: Pearson.
For those whom accessing this text may be challenging, selected sections of the reading may be provided by EduSTEM facilitators - please don’t hesitate to request them. These supplements will summarize and review key textbook concepts in detail. We suggest focusing on bolded terms and taking advantage of the external resources provided.

NCBI PubMed The premier source of past and present medical literature. Most supplemental information in Extensions is available via PubMed. When searching PubMed, be sure to use the “Free full text,” and “Sort by: Best Match” filters to find relevant and accessible results.

RCSB Protein Data Bank (PDB) A large database of useful 3D structures of large biological molecules, including proteins and nucleic acids. Use the search bar to find a molecule of interest, which can then be examined using the Web-based 3D viewer.
