Time for your first self assessment

To all participants and observers:

  • Your first self-assessment is due by end of day Tuesday 06/16 (6 pm Pacific Time).

  • Create a post in your team channel on STEM-Away.

You may continue to use other forms of collaboration channels but the self-assessment has to be submitted as a post in your team channel. This post will evolve into your STEM-Away Virtual Internship Certificate.

Use the following format

  • Concise overview of things learned. Break it up into Technical Area, Tools, Soft Skills

  • Three achievement highlights

  • List of meetings/ training attended including social team events

  • Goals for the upcoming week. Next self-assessment will be due on the following Tuesday 06/23

  • Detailed statement of tasks done. State each task, hurdles faced if any and how you solved the hurdle. You need to clearly mark whether the hurdles were solved with the help of training webinars, some help from project leads or significant help from project leads.

Observers: The above step is optional for you. But I would strongly encourage you to enter the details of what you have been working on.

  • Request change of role if it applies. You may request to become a task lead. Or switch between participant and observer roles.

Please note that the pace of the project will increase sharply from Week 3. Project leads will now function as leads and not “teachers”. If you are struggling in any way, this is a good time to switch to an observer role. You will get priority to enroll as a participant in the next session of your choice.

If you are a participant (or observer) and feel very comfortable with the pace, you can request to become a task lead. You will get priority to enroll as a project level lead position in upcoming sessions.

A few points:

  • Please make a new post for your self-assessment. You will own this post, add next rounds of self-assessments as replies and eventually this post will become your certificate. My apologies to those who have already entered self-assessments as replies to other threads. Can you create a new post and copy-paste your reply into the post. For the post title, you can just use “self-assessment” and optionally add your name.

  • Don’t worry too much about your first self-assessment. Do the best you can. Your entry is visible only to your team. We will scan all self-assessments and then hold a training session to help students write future self-assessments. Self-assessment is a critical skill that you will need to succeed in industry. (Maybe they use it in academia too but am not fully sure). We will help you acquire this skill.

  • Please “watch” this category for more announcements. It is a bit too much work to post in each team. Click on the icon with user+cog on the top right. And set your notification to watch this category (screenshot attached below)
