Self-Assessment (up to Week 5)

  • Technical Areas

    • Went from a level of almost no R experience to pretty good foundational knowledge of R in bioinformatics (how to generate useful plots and visualize data)
    • Learned more about Bioconductor packages and how they are useful for bioinformatics and data analysis
    • Learned how to what PCA and clustering were and how to perform those
    • Learned the best way to communicate technical information in a concise and digestible manner
    • Worked with Goral to create and manage the GitHub repository for our team
  • Leadership Skills

    • gained communication skills (especially how to manage such a big team all virtually)
    • learned how to take negative feedback and apply it to become a better leader
    • Figured out ways to break the ice and have more people talking in meetings
    • Successfully communicated both with mentors and other leads at meetings to break down tasks and schedule deliverables/timeline for the week
    • worked with Isha to conduct weekly happy hours
    • Led four technical webinars with other leads, as well as made meeting agendas and decks for the team meetings (bi-weekly)
    • Presented soft skills training during team meetings with Isha
    • Attended and helped with weekly office hours for the two teams
    • Communicated effectively with the leads about technical details of tasks

  • Achievements :

    • Became a lead with almost no prior R experience or bioinformatics experience, but was able to keep up with the learning
    • Led team meetings with big teams of up to 30 people
    • Able to guide participants as a leader without having the most technical experience going in

    • All the meetings that I hosted and all the leads/mentor meetings
  • Goals

    • Finish out the project strong and keep participants/observers engaged
    • Maintain the network I grew here even after the internship
    • This coming week, help ramp up the next session while making sure to check-in with the participants in the current one
